1% of the population have the disorder, in is mainly diagnosed between the ages 15-45 and it is more likely to be developed by men (men also have an earlier onset compared to women)

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM)  (usually used in the US) or Intenational classification of Disease (IDC) (usually used in Europe) can be used, two of these symptoms (one being positive) must be displayed for at least a month before getting diagnosed:

Positive (gaining something):

  • Hallucinations: Sensory experiences that include distortions of reality (e.g distortion of faces or hearing critical voices)
  • Delusions: Irrational beliefs about the world or themselves (e.g believing that the government is out to get them)
  • Disorganised Speech: Problem with organising speech, changing topics within sentences, speech may be completely incoherent 
  • Grossly Disorganised/Catatonic Behaviour:
