Components of the Blood:
Red Blood Cells:
Function: to carry oxygen in the bloodstream to cells
Adaptations:
- Contains haemoglobin which can combine reversibly with oxygen
- No nucleus- more haemoglobin
- Small and flexible- fit through narrow blood capillaries
- Biconcave shape- maximise their surface area for oxygen absorption
- Thin - short diffusion distance for oxygen to reach the centre of the cell
White blood cells:
Function:to kill bacteria and other pathogens
