Red Blood Cells:

Function: to carry oxygen in the bloodstream to cells

Adaptations:

• Contains haemoglobin which can combine reversibly with oxygen
• No nucleus- more haemoglobin
• Small and flexible- fit through narrow blood capillaries
• Biconcave shape- maximise their surface area for oxygen absorption
• Thin - short diffusion distance for oxygen to reach the centre of the cell

White blood cells:

Function:to kill bacteria and other pathogens
