Energy: The ability to do work

• in a variety of different forms (light, sound, heat)
• can be changed from one form to another
• cannot be created or destroyed
• measured in Joules (J)

Energy is Used for:

• Metabolism - in chemical reactions (respiration)
• Movement - inside and out (blood & muscles)
• Maintenance - repair and division of cells
• Production of Substances - hormones and enzymes
• Body temperature - control in endotherms

HOW?

• Light energy from the sun is converted into chemical energy during photosynthesis (p/s)
• the chemical energy is converted to ATP
• ATP is used to perform useful work
