Athenian men were preoccupied with status

Legitimacy - women kept inside to ensure it, proud of democracy, wanted little outside influence

  • Made sure inheritance passed on to citizens. Isaeus uses phratry as evidence (status from membership). Status = a focus of speaker & jury, must have thought phratry was good evidence or speaker would not have suggested it.
  • Apollodorus states Neaera is not a citizen, if allowed to continue, then why have legitimate wives? Would get 1/3 of property if he suceeded. 1 sided (law court).
  • Phrastor kept child to pass on status to child and avoid family to keep control of status.
  • Euphiletus also stands to lose his property by losing, so deliberately makes it clear that she only left due to his mother's funeral after his son was born to protect his citizenship rights. Also moral/legal status, not just financial rejected money offered, part of Solon's law.

Good Oikos - women
