Milgram proposed that the tendency we have to obey those that we perceive to be in authority is an evolutionary mechanism for maintaining a stable society. in a complex society social rules are needed and in sticking to these rules it requires that we give up a degree of our free will.
in order to accomplish this we have evolved into 2 states:
the autonomous state: this is when we act as we wish, including how our conscience dictates
the agentic state: this is when we surrender our free will and conscience to those of society
