Variables that affect obedience

Proximity

In the proximity variation, they were in the same room.
Obedience rate dropped from 65% - 40 % 
40% of participants went to 40v when the learner was in the room.

Touch proximity: teacher forced learner’s hand on the electric panel when he refused to answer. 

Obedience rate dropped to 30%

Third proximity: experimenter left the room and gave learner instructions via a telephone. 

Obedience rate dropped to 20.5%

 Buffer ~ when the participant can’t see the learner. This acts as a buffer which stops the participants from seeing the real consequence and therefore, obedience increases.

Location

Milgram changed the location from a prestigious university (Yale) to a run-down building.

The high status of the university gave the study credibility and respect in the eyes of the participants, thus making them more likely to obey.

Obedience dropped to 47.5%.

Uniform

Instead of wearing a grey lab coat as a symbol of authority, the researcher wore normal everyday clothes.

Obedience dropped to 20% which is the lowest of these variations.
