The Manhunt - Simon Armitage

"The Manhunt" - The title of the poem is a pun; his wife (1st person) is looking for her husband who was metaphorically lost at war.

Context - The poem is based on the ex-soldier, Eddie beddoes',life. He fought in Bosnia, but was discharged due to many injuries including PTSD, which still affects him today.

Meaning - The poem shows the affect that war has on people physically and physcologically. It also shows how war affects relationships.

Language - "parachute silk" metaphor to show fragility and juxtaposition.

"porcelain collar-bone" shows how fragile Eddie now is.

"frozen" - mind is frozen/living his personality he had at war/cold personality

Sonnet 43 - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Context - Browning was the daughter of a slave owner. Her father made his fortune through sugar plantations in Jamaica. She anomanously wrote poetry which went against her father's beliefs. 

Message - How instense love can be. 

Language - "after death" shows an overspill of love. 

"I love thee" the repetition of this shows intense devotion. 

Structure - Emjambment shows that her love is everlasting/neverending. 

The consistency of the line length shows how consistent her love is.
