Became a popular antidepressant treatment - involves passing a small current through the brain to cause epileptic-like electrical discharges

Can be effective treatment for depressed patients unresponsive to other therapies

  • Violent electrical assults on brain can lead to long term memory impariment

Dont work for 40-50%, don't cure disorder, drug treatment is for life - Chlorpromazine = movement disorders - Clozaphine = low levels of while blood

Raise levels of neurotransmitters noradrenalin and seritionin in the brain

monoamie-oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) / tricyclic antidepressants

MAOIs interact badly with food groups and meducation / tricyclic = heart problems

SSRIs (Prozac)

works for 60-70% - quick

Don't cure depression - dependance - side effects (e.g. violence) - 30% responded to placebo effect

Include probelms of side effects and the lack of ability people with seroious conditions to give full informed consent
