ELECTROMAGNETISM

The current flowing through a wire causes a magnetic field.Electric motors also use this effect.

Plotting compases can be used to find the direction of the magnetic field.

The direction of the magnetic field depends on the direction of the current in the wire.

A coil of wire is called solenoid.

Inside the solenoid, the fields from individual coils add together to form a very strong field.while Outside the solenoid the fields from one side cancel the fields from the other side to give a weaker field

A coil of wire with a current flowing through it is an ELECTROMAGNET

The strength of the magnetic field around the solenoid can be incresed by :

  • Incresing the current
  • Incresing the number of coils
  • Placing a piece of iron inside the coil (iron core)
