Tri-part personality theory

ID          0 - 2 yrs         Pleasure principle EGO   2 - 4 yrs         Reality principle SUPEREGO  4 - 6 yrs   Morality principle  ID - works to satisfy needs immedietly  - eros/life instinct - thanatos/death instinct Ego - operates mainly on the conscious & preconscious  - ruled by the reality principle - tries to balance the Id's demands for satisfaction with the Superego's demands for social conformity - inappropriate desires are not satisfied but repressed or sublimated Superego - partly conscious and unconscious record of rewards and punishmentsreceived from influential people - completed by age 7 - communicates its demands with feelings of pride, shame or guilt
