detected by the chemoreceptors

nerve inpulses to respiratory center in the medulla

nerve impulses to breathing muscles = intercostals and diaphram

increase in breathing = deeper and faster breathing

7 %  dissolved in plasma

23 %  combines with heamoglobin (proteins) = carbaminohaemoglobin

70 %  transported as a bicarbonate ion = hydrogen carbonate ion
