  • 1897 - Millicent Fawcett sets up the Suffragettes
  • 1906 - 1912 Liberal Welfare Reforms:
    • 1906 - Free School Meals
    • 1908 - Old age pensions (over 70)
               - 8 hour day for miners
    • 1911 - National Insurance part one: sick leave and free medical treatment
               - Mps paid

  • 1914 - Defence of the Realm Act (DORA): allowed gov. to seize needed land/buildings, take over industries and censorship of publications
  • 1916 - Conscription of all men aged 18 - 40
             - Military Servcice Act: men could object to going to war
  • 1917 - Voluntary rationing
  • 1918 - Compulsory rationing introduced by DORA
             - Women over 30 get the vote
            
    - 'Home fit for Heroes': half a million house to be built by 1933 for returning soldiers

  • 1942 - Beveridge Report: Calls for better welfare
  • 1944 - Butler Act: Compulsory education until 15
  • 1945 - Family Allowances Act: money per child per week
             - National Insurance part two: uemployment pay
  • 1948 - National Assistance Act: for anybody in need
             - NHS: free (doctors opposed idea)
             - Children's Act: concils provide good housing and care for children
