Love of neighbour

Leviticus "the foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself"

  • when jesus commanded to 'love thy neighbour as yourself' he was echoing the OT book of Leviticus 
  • the israelites are welcome foreigners as fellow citizens 

Luke "love the lord with all your heart and with all your soul" "do this and you will live"

  • the law commands people to love god and their neighbour as themselves 
  • everyone is part of gods creation 
  • your neighbour is everyone who we meet on life's journey

God’s love as a model

Exodus "the lord, the lord, the compassionate and gracious god"

  • god is gracious and merciful 
  • forgiving and steadfast in love

John "we love because he first loved us"

  • if you don't love your brothers and sisters you don't love god 
  • it is impossible to love god without loving other people

Regard for truth

Samuel "fear the lord and serve him faithfully"

  • the Israelites are commanded to fear the lord and serve him faithfully 
  • freed Israelites from Egypt and lead them through wilderness 

Ephesians "each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour"

  • paul advises christians to speak the truth 
  • be angry but don't do sin

The role of conscious

Timothy "the goal of this command is love"

  • conscious is informed both by the bible and work of the Holy Spirit 
  • they are to confess their sins and experience gods forgiveness 
  • when we violate standards we are expected to show guilt 

Corinthians "our conscious testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world"

  • you must satisfy their conscious 
  • the goal is to develop a mature conscious based on biblical teaching 
  • it can become overly sensitive false guilt

The need for forgiveness

Matthew "for if you forgive other people who sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you"

  • if you dont forgive you will not be forgiven 
  • you must spend a lifetime forgiving 

Colossians "bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone"

  • forgiveness is the forgiveness freely granted to sinners by god
  • forgivneeds is a conscious choice that christians must make through a decision motivated by obedience
