Loss of tribal lifestyles

  • 7000 different cultural groups live in Papau New Guinea - most have their own language 
  • Many different cultural expressions such as art
  • People live quite separetly and rely on sunbsistence farming 
  • 1884, became a partly British, partly German colony, 1905, had come under control of Australia and gained independence in 1975
  • Under colonial rule the citizens experienced social, political + economic integration
  • Tribal welfare was repressed 
  • Plantations etc moved people together
  • More intercultural marriages etc.. so cultural languages arent passed down 
  • Spread Christianity and Western Education 
  • Some cultural conflict caused

  • Caused social problems - lots of people-particularly men, in close proximity
  • Fights, gangs etc

Loss of ecosystems and anti-Globalisation in India

  • WHO - out of over 3000 towns there are only 209 sewage treatment fcacilities 
  • Environmentalists argue that the persuit of economic growth is overlooking the social and environmental needs 
  • Pollutants and waste are beginning to filter into the soils and wetlands
  • Investment is needed

Immigation in the UK

  • After WW2 - 500,000 from Carribean
  • Pull factors= rebuilding of industry etc
  • No visa restrictions 
  • PUSH= poverty in the carribean 
  • Textiles industries in UK were booming in 1960s- 75,000 Pakinstani's and Indian's migrated
  • Many of these people settled in rural areas or particular cities

  • L'exception culturelle- concept introduced - culture must be treated differently from other commercial products
  • Restricts imports on foreign films and media to limit cultural erosion
  • Gov can also subsidise cultural activities 
  • They have tried to focus on cinema 
  • Radio has to broadcast 40% french songs 
  • Limited success- e.g. 50% french films and 50% american

  • Aborigine settlements
  • 634 First Nation govs
  • Assembly of First Nations- protects their culture 
  • Worked with Canadian oil sands industries to protect their land 
  • 20km exclusion zone agreed 
  • Also deal made that the production must give the First Nation companies $100 million anually
