Fullerenes

?

Properties

Fullerenes are made of carbon, shaped like closed tubes or hollow balls.

Fullerenes also have a huge surface area

They can form nanotubes - tiny carbon cylinders

Nanotubes can conduct both electricity and thermal energy. They also have a high tensile strength.

Uses of fullerenes

They make great industrial catalysts and lubricants due to their huge surface area.

Fullerenes can "cage" other molecules, trapping the molecule or atom inside it. This can be used to deliver drugs into the body.

Technology that uses nanotubes is called nanotechnology. Nanotubes can be used in electronics or to strenghten materials without adding much weight, such as in tennis racket frames.
