Food Production

Fertilisers

  • chemicals that increase crop yeild
  • provide minerals such as nitrate
  • fertilisers replace minerals used up suring crop growth
  • can be natural

Pesticides

  • increase crop yeild
  • kill pests that feed on the crops such as microorganisms or rats
  • some non pest species can also be harmed

Antibiotics

  • kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria
  • treat and prevent disease caused by bacteria
  • less energy wasted on fighting disease
  • promotes growth
  • allows animals to digest food more efficiently

Selective Breeding

1) Plants with good characteristics are selected

  • that will increase crop yeild
  • have a high resistance to pests/disease

2) Selected plants are bred together.

3) Continue this over several generations until a high yeilding plant is produced.
