HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY-encourages boys to see themselves as superior to females. (ANN OAKLEY)

HEGEMONIC FEMININITY- encourages girls to be nurturers; emotional caretakers etc.(ANN OAKLEY)

MANIPULATION-parents encourage/discourage behaviou due to child's sex. CANALISATION-parents channel childrens interests into those 'appropriate' for child's sex.

LEARNING & INTERNALIZATION of gender codes results in SOCIAL CONFORMITY TO HEGEMONIC EXPECTATIONS.

CODES: Colour,Dress,Appearance,Toy,Play,Etiquette, Family Media, Speech,Domestic,Control

Men have constucted legal and political bariers that stop women achieving equality.

CHANGES- they believe barriers are being overcome: 1970 EQUAL PAY ACT, 1975 SEX DISCRIMINATION ACT,MATERNAL RIGHTS + PENSIONS FOR WOMEN,, DIVORCE LAWS,**** IN MARRIAGE+DOMESTIC VIOLENCE= CRIMES

CRITICISMS: Reflects experiences of white,mid class professional women.

Women still bear majority of chidcare + housework even with full time job.

There is still some domestic violence + **** in mariage today.
