Feminism is the sociological perspective and political movement that focuses on women's
oppression (unjust treatment) and the struggle that they face in order to end it.
Feminists argue that sociology has taken a `malestream' viewpoint that ignores women.
They use the term `Patriarchy' to describe the male domination based society, a system or
ideology of male power over women. Because of this, they examine women's experiences
and study society from a female perspective.
Different strands of Feminism:
Marxist, radical, liberal and difference feminism
Main aims:
To reveal the extent and injustice of male domination
To show how men use their power to maintain rewards and privileges towards men
To show how major decisions in society are made by men to benefit men
Feminists are preoccupied with gender inequality so they tend to ignore other aspects of
