English AQA relationships - poems notes

Ghazal
Ghazal
Subject: Unrequited love, or forbidden love
Structure: Two couplets --> two people --> each line represents each person
Language: Natural language --> "Grass" "rose" --> these are natural and organic --> they are permenant and are natural just like the love
Imagery --> object in her lovers love --> "Your are the arms around my bark"
Movement --> "laurel leaf"
Quickdraw
Structure: four different stanzas, the last one is slightly longer and different to the others --> end and it's finished, the other three --> look like a gun --> fight taking place
Language: western --> "last chance Saloon" --> the final straw, the last chance to save their relationship or one of them will get hurt
Imagery --> "The silver bullets of your kiss" --> "silver bullets" for catching wearwolfs --> dangerous now not real love
"trigger of my tongue" --> she is fed up of holding back her words, and she is about to fight back --> like shooting a bullet (her words are the bullet)
Movement --> Ellipses --> Take this...and this...." continious could mean the end of the relationshop --> climax as it's ambigious
Sound --> "this" --> hiss --> bitter --> sibilance --> anger --> end
Born Yesterday
Structure: Two different stanzas, one about someones wish for a normal child, second is about his wish for Sally Amis
Language: "catching of happiness"
Imagery: "tighly folded bud" --> she is about to blossom and is flourishing
Movement: Pause at the end larkins wish, to make the reader think
Sound: alliteration --> "prove possible"
Sister Maude
Structure: Mood alters --> longer last line --> distance --> distance is getting bigger
Language: --> negative --> "spy and peer" --> Betrayal and the relationship between the sisters
Imagery: Religious --> "death and sin" --> hatred and she has disobeyed God
Movement: clotted curls --> dead and blood
Sound --> sibilance and alliteration --> " Spared his soul" --> hatred --> sin --> adam and even
Brothers
Structures: Longer last stanzas, distance
Language --> adjectives --> "windmilled"
Imagery --> "we chased olympic gold" --> excited and determination
Movement --> Embjambment --> progress
Sibilance --> "spouting six year old views" --> very childish
To His Coy Mistress
Structure: All have different seduction techniques
Lanague: emphasise --> "ruby" --> most precious gem
Imagery --> "times winged charriot" --> time is chasing love
Movement --> "state/rate" --> Rhyme --> deserves love
Sound --> "stand still" --> "sibilance" --> annoyance
The Farmers Bride
Structure:
Language --> "brown" always used --> comfot, "berries redden" --> growing up now
Imagery: --> always compared to an animals --> interferior
Movemement --> embjambement -> fast pace of the relationship
Sound --> "frightened fay" --> alliteration --> fairy, timid, small, unsual --> special
Time --> always on his mind --> seasons, as he is a farmer
Harmonium
Structure: 4 stanzas, 2 short, 2 long, reflective
Language --> ambigious language --> "tobacco smog" --> from old or the smoking of father
Imagery --> "one of it's notes had lost its tongue" --> can't speak aswell
movement --> "repetition" "pedalled and pedalled"
Sound --> "alliteration" hummed harmonics --> song, onomatpeaic quality
Sonnet 43
Structure: not tradditional, neither is love --> find in all sources
Language --> time
Imagery --> religious
Movement --> " i love thee" repeated --> anaphora --> prayer
Sound --> "depth, breadth, height" out of breath --> feels
Sonnet 116
Structure: sonnet, structure --> love is traditional
Language --> marriage --> permenant
Imagery --> "That looks on tempest and is never shaken"
Movement --> "repetition" --> "love"
The Manhunt
Structure --> couplets --> two people --> togetherness
Language --> He is emotional "punctured, porclean"
Imagery --> "frozen river"
Movement --> half rhyme --> "hurt/heart" --> relationship is broken, fixing process
Sound --> "handle and hold" --> alliteration --> careful, she has to keep him up
Praise Song for my Mother
Structure: last stanzas, is longer and shortner --> showing life after her mum
Language: Adjectives --> calming tone
Imagery --> Moons eyes to me --> shes watching and is guiding her daughter
Movement --> repetition --> "replenishing, replenishing" - --> nececisty
Hour
Structure: Sonnet --> not all set structure --> love is not as we seem
Language --> "time" --> thousands of seconds --> try to emphasise and increase time,
Imagery -. "bright as a dropped coin"
Movememnt: "gold" repetition --> love may not always suceed
