Britain's economy in early 1900's

1st Nation to industrialise 

Had staple industies; Ship building, textiles, iron and coal.

It was labelled the "Workshop of the world".

Lacked in argiculture so relied on imports.

It was the 4th highest coutntry in the world for output per head.

It was chanellged by Germany and the U.S.

Social

4 million people lived in poverty.

1834 poor law, opened the workhouse for the poorest people.

Many people lived with their entire family due to them not being able to afford their own home. This led to cramped conditions, and people going hungry.

The richest 10% owned 90% of the wealth.

Religion was key; Church of England (protestants), Catholics and Non-conformists (protestants)

Political

Conservatives in power from 1895-1905. Lord Salisbury passed on his leadership to his nephew in 1902. Balfour resigned in 1905 due to divided government, and his unpopularity.

Liberals came into power after the 1906 landslide victory.

Britain was not a democracy. Only 2/3 of working men could vote, as you had to own a property, or pay high rent. 

30% of people could vote nationally, as women were unable to vote.

International

Britain owned 1/4 of Earths land.

It had the largest navy in Europe.

Participated in the Boer War from 1899-1902 against the Dutch in South Africa.
