JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group

  • JPEG is a compressed, bitmapped image file type
  • file sizes are low as it reduces repetition of pixel patterns
  • origionally designed for photographs
  • widely used for web pages thanks to the effectiveness of compressing images
  • the amount of compression can be varied, and at high levels of compression a very low file size can be achivied
  • JPEG does not support animation or trancenparency, and the compression used is lossy which means that image details get permanently lost during compression
