THEMES

A golden thret throught the whole film is identity. The prefered reading is acnhored by the sign of the rat in the window, whihc signifies untrust dirt whihc shows the true reflection of the caracthers

recurrentt throught the movie, all the charters reveal their true identity all the showing signs of a rat

Relationship of extract to the rest of the film

Chosen extract 1h27m18 sec untill 1h30m46 ( In the middle of the movie)

Summary of the extract: Billy is following the sargent down the exit of the theater, this quicly escalates to a chase from billy of the Sullivan. I ends up with Sullivan stabbing an inocent man thinking it was bully, to protect his identity.

Theme in the extract A theme in my extrct relates to teh rest of the film is the lack of trust between carachters. This is shown in my extract, for example in my extract we se Sullivan stab an innocent man. his is always allert because he doesnt trust anyone. he is wanted by billy therefore he has a lack of trust in anyone me meet. This theme is present later on in the movie when his girlfriend begins to be suspisous of his phone calls, and who she is in a relationship with.9

Sociocultural Significance

In the 1970s the us FBI expirienced the highest ammount of infiltration from the irish mob.  the directorn intent is to potrey this event rhough Sullivans charachter, because he delivers inormation to Costello which is the head of the irish mob. This event was used to gain greater accsess to inormation by the irish mob to also get one step ahead of their rivles,

Film Genre and Directors Intent

GENRE : CRIME DRAMA AND THRILLER

TYPICAL CONVENTION IN A CRIME DRAMA

This conforms to the convenctions though the chase, when sullivan is beign chased by billy, and by involving weapons such as knifes, when sullivan stabbs the innocent guy, and when where there is a shoot off.The conflict reches the resolution when costello gets shot.

IT FOLLOWS PROPS THEORY

Sullivan and Bily play the protagonists Costello plays the part of the antagonist, the sideckic is Sullivan

Critical and success of the film

THE DEPARTED

CRTISED

For years he's been toiling to make grand visionary statements (Kundun, Gangs of New York, The Aviator) and each time, the world and the Academy voters remain unimpressed. - J. ROMNEY THE INDIPENDENT. This opinion contrast to the majority of praise that the film recieced after its reaelese.

The set-up certainly draws out the best in a cast, led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon, that’s probably unused to working in someone else’s shadow.

Scorsese won his only oscar with the departed

Focused analysis N1

Cting/ Casting The focuse of my extract its on the two main charcters Billy and Sullivan. Sullivan is played by Matt Damon who was purpously chosen by the director because he was born in Boston, therefore familiar with he accent . Bily in the other hand is played by Leonardo Di caprio, the directore pupusoly chose Di caprio due to prevous collaboration in very succseful movies such as the wolf of wall street.

CAMERA WORK

Oblique/Canted Angle  camera is tilted (ie is not placed horizontal to floor level), to suggest imbalance, transition and instability.

The prefered reading is anchored by the oblique angle because it signifies that Sullivan is beign folowed. Pans the camera is turned, often to follow a moving object which is kept in the middle of the frame. In this case Suivan is beign followed by Billy.

Dolly shot  movment when the stranger is geting closser to Sullivan, so the camera gets progressivly close to potrey the fear and tension Sulivan is going through, but also shows his intent to protect him self with a knife

FOCUSED ANALYSIS N2

CAMERA SHOT TYPES

The start of this scene is shot with a mid shot of the two carachtes following one naother down the streets of china town, this last detailed is conveid by the surounding location filled with asian people and asian shops

1- Close up  of the ENEVLOPE ( SEMIOTICS SIGNIFIER THE ENVELOPE SIGNIFIES THAT IS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION ) This close up sugests to the audience that the envelope contains important information, but most importantly who is holding the information

2-Close up OF THE REFLECTIVE MIRROR CURTAIN  this shows billy the location of Sullivan after he lost him

3- Close up THE KNIFE  this shows to the audience that sullivan is ready to protect his identity at all cost even if it casues some ones death, this empezises on the theme of trust as he cant trust no one knwing his identity

Focused analysis N3

EDITING

Quick cuts from the object of emtional significance which is the envelope to the carachters face, to show their emotion.

Jump cuts from sulivan to billy makes them seem never too far apart. This buils tension between them and for the audience as either of them could be caught.

Video effects a moment where Bily slows down his chase the camera slows down, this shows that he is paying close atention to only one thing whihc is the envelope in Sullivans ahnd instenad of the chaotic surrounding of a busy road  to potrey his movement and also blurr his image.

SOUND

SCRIPT DIALOGUE  There is no conversation in the extract, this is because it is a chase, but a few word of profanity are let out during the chase, from billys side after repeadtly losing sight of Sullivan

sript writing process

Music:  DIGETIC  at times wherre teh abcground noise is present and the sound of teh telephone

NON DIGETIC  during the moment of chase to create the effect of more tension in the scene

MISE EN SCENE

When Billy Costigan is following Collin Sullivan through the back alleyways, Billy Costigan’s face is light up more brightly than Matt Damon's character. Here the lighting gives us a clear idea of who is the protagonist and who isn’t.

ABBANDONED WHEREHOUSE this adhear to the thriller drama genre as it create tesion and atmosphere.

CLOUD OF SMOKE  Billy is passing through this closud of smoke, once again tis applies to teh genre because it connotes the unkown

LIGHTING

In this extract director intent is to use various colour to potrey differetn mood, but also to create different atmosphere.

DARK GREEN LIGHTS  relates back to the thriller genre, it is and intruguing colour, whihc ads to teh unkown atmosphere

Red simpolises danger this connetes to building more tension
