Curious Incident - Lies and Trust
Christopher: -"I cannot tell lies" - acting, metaphors and religion is "like a kind of lie" - vunerable, doesn't expect deception - "Couldn't stay at home anymore" (home is a safe place) - stills trusts Judy but not Ed "I pushed the bed up against the door in case father came in" and "It's OK I'll be here" (end when seeing Ed) - "So he can bark if ayone comes into my room at night" - "Father always tells me the truth, which means that he loves me" (love = truth)
Ed: - "Your mother had to go to hospital" - "I killed Wellington" - encourages Christopher to lie to policeman - hides letters from mother -"I did it for you Christopher. Honestly, I did. I never meant to lie" (thinks he's doing it for the best) - Babies Christopher, gives him lots of dialogue, makes him comfortable)
Judy: - Doesn't directly lie to Christopher - Hides Roger from Christopher "and that's when I started spending lots of time with Roger" - Christopher trusts Judy
Siobhan: - "Can I come and live in your house?" (trusts her, she is a friend) - "I would help you if you were worried about that" - finds comfort in talking to her
Minor Characters: - Mrs Alexander provides information "very good friends" - "I can't be on my own with you because you are a stranger" (doesn't understand who to trust, links to simple idea of stranger danger, immature idea)
Curious Incident - Lonliness
Christopher: - doesn't believe in religion, heaven is "a black hole then dead people are fired into space" - astronaut "there is no one else" (isolated environment) - Sionhan (inner monologue) breaks the 4th wall - "everyone at school is stupid" intellectually isolated - "there's not much to do on a Saturday", can't be independent - emotionally isolated "I don't want to talk to father" and "I couldn't stay at home anymore" - father lied and mother didn't try to contact him - trusts animals but has no physical contact with people "touch my hand Christopher"
Ed: - "bottling up for 2 years" lies to Christopher for his benefit as well - "She (Mrs Shears) helped me through a difficult time" - "there's not much to do on a Saturday unless father takes me out" (Ed has all the responsibility, limited social life) "I cooked his meals. I cleaned his clothes. I looked after him" - "Rhodri is father's work friend" (Ed has no social life, WORK friend)
Judy: - "If I hadn't of married your father, I think I'd be living in a littlefarm house in the South of France" fantasises - a mother leaving her child is more villainised by society, she was desperate "It would better for all of us if I went" (convincing herself) - reminisces on giving Christopher a train set for Xmas in a letter, happy times but Chris. was interested in train set not her - longs for physical contact, Chris. pushes her away - Roger is priority, they live near his work, she is home alone
Minor Characters: - Mrs Alexander engages with Christopher by talking about his interests - "I see you every day going to school"
Curious Incident - Logic
Christopher: - "have you arrested father" (wants logical consequences, doesn't understand difference between animals and humans) - metaphors "just confuse him" - takes jokes seriously(Rhodri and Mr Wise) - train set provides structure - "Christopher, count the cardinal numbers" calms him down -Eats yellow food - Needs exact times "Jesus. Half an hour Christopher" (causes frustration but doesn't realise) - "I see everything. Most other people are lazy. They never look at anything" (only sees unecessary things, doesn't realise mother is alive) - "I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen" (needs to know exactly what is going to happen) - "I like the police, you know what they are meant to be doing" - "This made me feel a lot calmer because it is what policemen say on television and in films" - Christopher asks lots of questions because he needs to know all the details
Siobhan: - "Christopher, people don't want to here about a maths question in a play" (Siobhan used not just for logic but to show what is wrong and right in society) - play not in linear chronology (disjointed, confusing, makes audience pay attention) Siobhan provides some order
Ed: - "Let's call it a project" (when Ed is trying to get Christopher's trust back)
Minor Characters: - Mrs Gascoyne is a repesentation of regulated society
Curious Incident - Violence
Christopher: - Christopher lashes out when touched "you lay on the floor and screamed" (when Judy and Chris. go shopping) - "grabbing is OK" (when Ed hits Chritopher, defending Ed because he trusts him) - "you grabbed the chopping boad and threw it and broke my toes" (Judy to Christopher - "I find people confusing" (Christopher doesn't understand why Ed gets anger with him) - physical response of crying
Ed: - "When the red mist comes down" - Hits Christopher - "maybe if I'd just given it a kick it would've backed off" (talking about Wellington), anger increases very quickly - "you little ****" and "memory man" (verbally abusive) -does not show emotions
Judy: - "I hit him, which was wrong" (Judy hit Ed when arguing before she left) - has the physical response of crying
Minor characters: - Roger gets angry and frustrated with Christopher "You think you're so clever don't you?" and "someone was going to get hurt"
Relationship - Judy and Christopher
1) Before leaving: - "If I hadn't married your father, I think I'd be living in a little farmhouse in the South of France" - "Come on Christopher, touch my hand. Come on. Stop screaming" (She can handle him) - Pretends to be eaten by a shark and makes Christopher cry (shows she does not yet know how to act around him but he cares for her a lot and always needs her near) - "I was at the end of my tether" (gets frustrated and angry) - "You wouldn't let me touch you" (relies on physical contact)
2) Letters: - "Maybe if you had been different, I might have been better at it" (recognises her failure but not taking responsibility) - Does not want to leave Christopher but "it would be better for us all if I went" (making desicions without others opinions, selfish) - "But when I rang your father he said I couldn't talk to you" (not fighting for Christopher) - "I used to have dreams that it would get better" (lonely, sad, wanted a life she couldn't have) - She has negative opinion of their relationship whereas Christopher's is positive
3) In London: - Desperate for physical contact, she forgets but remembers, shows their relationship developing - Christopher still sees her as a safe place to go, Judy is home - Leaves Roger and puts Christopher before herself "Mother has to clean the toilet before use it" - Given up her life in London, sacrificed everything - "It's OK I'll be here" (end when Ed's there, shows Christopher feels reassured and safe when Judy is there like in beginning)
Relationship - Ed and Christopher
1) Caring father: - realtionship is strained, Ed is lying but trying to uphold the image of a good father - "your father is much more patient than me" - has full responsibility of Christopher - babies him, Christopher has lots of dialogue whereas Ed is blunt - scarifices his social life to look after Christopher, prioritises him, Rhodri is a WORK friend - knows how to act around Christopher "Christopher touth my hand"
2) After finding letters: - "It's a bloody dog Christopher, a bloody dog" gets angry quickly, "when the red mist comes down" - "You little ****" and "memory man" insulting, bad relationship - "It's going to be alright" feels guilty - "I can't live in the house with you anymore because it is dangerous" doesn't trust Ed, scared of him - Ed becomes violent
3) Regaining trust: - "Christopher I'm really, really sorry" - "Christopher. I'll be back" (persistant to regain the relationship) - "Don't scream. I'm not going to hurt you." Christopher is scared - "this just hurts too much" (when Christopher won't talk to Ed - Christopher threatens Ed with a knife becuase he thinks that if he capable of killing Wellington, he could kill Christopher - Ed stretches out his hand to Christopher but he ignores it - Ed gives Christopher more independence, treated more as an adult "I'm taking further maths next year" tells him the truth
