Malcom X Aims

  • Wanted a seperate identity and create a seperate state of the black community
  • Wanted to promote closer ties between Africans and African America
  •  Wanted to bring about independance for people of African decscent here in the western hemisphere.

Malcom X Methods

  • Recognised for his brilliant oratory skills. He used his powerful and motivational speeches to recruit members (recruited 100,000 in years '52 and '64.)
  • Believed in much more violent methods, under the impression peaceful protest had no influence at at all.

  •   A more realisitc role model for Ghetto African Americans than Martin Luther King
  • Became the foundation of the more radical side of the movement such as black power
  • Could relate to him as a reformed drug addict criminal - became an inspirational figure.

  • Wanted to deal the fustration of continuing discrimination etc.
  • Waned blacks to have pride in their heritage
  • Wated blacks to take responsibitlty for their own lives and reject white help.

  • Adopted the slogan "Black is Beautiful," which encouraged pride within the black community.
  • Used more violent methods than MLK
  • Targeted major public events ( 1968 Olympics - Smith and Carlos, clenched salute wearing black glove.)

  • They have gave a solid image of the passion black people felt
  • failed to provide long term solutions

  • Black panthers wore uniforms and was prepared to use weapons.

Failures of Martin Luther King

  • Critised as too peaceful
  • The angrier black power movement appealed to increasing numbers of African Americans who were impatient with the slow pace of King's nonviolent tactics
