Chemistry GCSE Unit 3

The periodic table

?

History

Newlands and Mandeleev attempted to classify elements by order of atomic weight

Elements with similar properties are in columns called groups

Mendeleev left gaps for elements that hadn't been discovered yet

When electrons, protons and neutrons were discovered the table was in order of ptoton numbers

The modern table has elements with the same number of electrons in the outer shell in the same group

The number of electrons in the outer shell determines reactivity
