Extraction using the Hall-heroult process

How is Al extracted when using the Hall-heroult process?

  • Alumina dissolved in molten cryolite (Na3AIF6) and electrolysis is used to extract Al.
  • Aqueous AI2O3 is not used because the Al will readily oxidise by H ions in the solution (water).
  • Can’t use molten as Al2O3 had a melting point of 2000°C so not practical.

Cycloalkanes

Alicyclic : hydrocarbon with carbon atoms joining together in a ring structure
—> general formula : CnH2n
—> add cycle at the start
—> follow the same naming rules as alkanes
—> cyclopropane

Aliphatic compounds : a compound that contains carbon and hydrogen in a straight or branched chain but is not aromatic
