  • On the other hand black celebrities were seen as positives to black americans

Describe the activities of the KKK (5)

  • White anglo saxon protestans (WASPS) originally for Europe
  • They wear white cloaks and carry with them the American flag
  • They targeted black people and anyone who was against them
  • They would tar and feather victims to humiliate them
  • A famous KKK activity is lynching
  • They left burning crosses in the gardens of their victims

How important was the New Deal to the changing liv

  • It did not bring about radical change but it made some improvements in their economic condition
  • The new deal provided 1 million jobs for black americans and training for 500,000
  • The PWA allocated funds for the building of black hospitals, universities and housing projects
  • FERA granted aid to 30% of Black American families
  • The number of employed BA by the govt rose from 50,000 to 200,000
  • However Roosevelt did little to eliminate unfair hiring practices and job discrimination

Was WW2 a turning point in the Civil Rights issue

  • Slight turning point for BA in the civil rights issue
  • The NAACP gained over 100,000 members because black people became aware of black civil rights.
  • As the casualties increased during the war the forces became intergrated
  • Roosevelt made all employers and work agents end segregation
  • Nearly 2 million black men were working in factories and not doing menial jobs.
  • At the end of the war black men were even allowed to become pilots.
  • Although the president let BA vote, there were still members of the KKK that were lynching people.
  •  There were also riots in the factories due to the integration

  • It showed people that the president would get involved and civil rights couldnt be ignored
  • The federal Govt were not afraid to get involved
  • The world thought the USA were being hypocritical and it embarressed the USA
  • People in the North had not realised how bad racism was in the Southern states
  • It made some people less racist
  • Black activists realised they needed to change peoples attitudes

Describe the montgomery bus boycott (5)

  • The boycott lasted 13 months with black people cycling and marching, refusing to get on segregated transport
  • MLK guided the BA through the boycott
  • After  13 months the supreme court made all buses in montgomery intergrated 
  • This gave the BA hope and the motivation for more change and an end to segregation

  • Transport became integrated
  • It showed that non-violent peaceful methods work
  • Showed that if BA worked together they would succeed
  • It encouraged further action
  • It promoted MLK and his pacifist philosophy
  • Showed all BA that victory was possible
  • However not 100% successful as feedom rides had to be carried out to test it

  • Formed in California in 1966
  • They had 2 leaders, Huey Neuton and Bobby Seale
  • They had 4 desires - Equality in, Education,Housing,Civil rghts and Employment
  • They were influenced by Malcom X and believed in black superiority
  • The black panthers movement was destroyed by the FBI

  • Contributed significantly
  • He believed in non-violent, pacifist approach
  • He held marches at Washington which raised awareness of the CRM and spoke his famous speech "i have a dream"
  • His marches in Birmingham and Selma although turned out violent, led to the voting rights act
  • He helped achieve integration on buses after the bus boycott and promoted sit-ins
  • He was significant to the passing of the Civil Rights movement

  • Life has improved significantly for many BA since the 1930s. However, the pace of change has been varied.
  • In the 1930s the KKK had the most members they had ever had and the number of lynching rose significantly.
  • The KKK were mainly targeting BA in the south,men,women and children were attacked.
  • Black men and women had to face homelessness during the depression years as they either had extremely low paid jobs or their jobs were take off them by unemployed white citizens.
  • However towards the end of the 30s Roosevelt had set up a "Black cabinet"which was a group of middle class BA hired by the president to find out the opinions of black people  
  • The 1940s was an excellant turning point for the BA, WW2 played a major part in the lives of BA
  • The selective services act resulted in Black men to join the army, but once in the army black men were segregated from white men and put into the jim crow army
  • The NAACP rose up to 450,000 members during the war as black people became aware of their civil righhts
  • By the end of the war black men were training to become pilots
  • Black men in the war was a huge turning point for civil rights
  • By the 1950s the pace of change for BA started to speed up
  • Inspired by Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat up on the bus, there was a year long boycott
  • Schools  became integrated due to the Brown vs Topeka court case but when black people were admitted into white schools it sparked protests from white racists
  • Most of the racism still took place in the south
  • During the 1960s MLK and the black panthers made huge changes for the lives of BA
  • A range of laws were passed to help black people become more equal
  • The black panthers saw that some BA did not just want equality, they wanted black superiority.
  • Interacial marriages became legal, they got equal voting rights and segregation in the housing market ended
  • The 70s was a good decade for BA.
  • A black is beautiful campaign was launched for BA to be proud of who they are.

  • Tremendous influence on young urban BA
  • Believes in islamic readings and black supremacy
  • He criticised MLK for not using violence and making very slow progress
  • His actions helped frustrated black americans
  • BA that believed in black power were influenced by Malcom X
  • Helped many BA stand up to racists

NAACP

  • Walter White was the leader
  • They challenged White supremes and segregation
  • There were 90,000 members
  • They aimed to make 7 million Americans free
  • They managed to reduce the number of lynching
  • They were especially against lynching in the southern states
  • National association for the advanced coloured people

  • Brown vs Topeka court case 1954
  • The board of education led to discrimination in education unconstitutional.
  • Little rock 9 1957 
  • BA tried to enter school but were met by an angry mob
  • The president got involved and wouldn't stand for states ignoring the law.
  • It showed the racism in the South and helped the crmJames Meredith 1961
  • The president got involved and had to get troops to escort Meredith to his lectures at Mississippi university
  • It showed that they would not stand for states being discriminatory.
