Hill 60

  • April 1915
  • German troops fired down on allies
  • British soldiers dug under the hill
  • 17/05/1915 - five mines exploded and blew the top of the hill off
  • British took over control

  • On the first day the British suffered 60,000 casualties when they thought they would only suffer 10,000
  • Allies suffered 400,000 casualties

  • Tunnels dug under Arras, joining with existing tunnels to create rooms with access to electricity and running water
  • Underground hospitals with 700 beds and operating theatres
  • Able to move troops safely

  • First large-scale tank attacks
  • Over 450 tanks used
  • Tanks were effective but did not have infantry support so lost almost all ground gained
