B6.1 - Vaccination.

  • Injects inactive pathogen into body to stimulate white blood cells to produce antiobodies.
  • if pathogen tries to enter body again, white blood cells RAPIDLY respond to produce antibodies, preventing infection.
  • If large population is immune, spread is reduced.

B6.4 - Developing drugs

  • Tested in labs using cells, tissues and live animals.
  • Preclinical testing - in lab on cells tissues and animals.
  • Clinical trials - healthy volounteers and patients, used in low dosages for saftey and then higher dosage for optimum dose
  • Double blind trials - given real and placebo (fake) drug, neither doctor or volounteer knows which is which. used to test side effects and effectivness
