A persons Estimated Average daily Requirement (EAR) of protein can be calculated using;
EAR (g) = 0.6 x body mass (kg)
It varies with age- a teenager needs more protein than adults because they are still growing.
It also changes during and after pregnancy- pregnant women need extra protein to help their baby grow and to produce milk to breast feed.
Eating disorders, e.g. anorexia and bulimia can cause under nutrition.
They result in a poor diet which can lead to other illnesses, e.g. liver failure, kidney failure, heart attacks, muscle wastage, low blood pressure and ineral defficiencies.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a guide to help decide if someone is underweight, normal, overweight or obese.
It can be calculated using;
BMI = body mass in kg / height in m squared
