Diet problems

  • A persons Estimated Average daily Requirement (EAR) of protein can be calculated using;
    EAR (g) = 0.6 x body mass (kg)
  • It varies with age- a teenager needs more protein than adults because they are still growing.
  • It also changes during and after pregnancy- pregnant women need extra protein to help their baby grow and to produce milk to breast feed.
  • Eating disorders, e.g. anorexia and bulimia can cause under nutrition.
  • They result in a poor diet which can lead to other illnesses, e.g. liver failure, kidney failure, heart attacks, muscle wastage, low blood pressure and ineral defficiencies.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) is a guide to help decide if someone is underweight, normal, overweight or obese.
  • It can be calculated using;
    BMI = body mass in kg / height in m squared
