Unrbanisation is the process where an increasing proportion of the population lives in towns and cities (and there is a reduction in living in rural areas.)
Rural - urban migration is a process in whic people move from the countryside to towns or cities.
Reasons for migration out of rural areas are called push factors, some of these include:
Limited transport, lack of food and water, poor housing, no health care, lack of sanatation, poor quality of life, lack of infurstructure, flooding, drought, high crime rates, war, poor education.
Reasons for migrating to cities are called pull factors, some of these include:
Employment, better quality of life, more use of facitities eg. schools and hospitles, better acess to food and water, better housing, better inferstructure, better education, lower crime rates, political sercurity, lower risk of natrual disaster.
This is made of 5 stages. It discribes the different areas of a city. From inside out it goes:
Central Business District or CBD which is made up for only high profit businesses as the land is of high cost and in short supply.
Light manufacturing is in the inner city and is made up of smaller businesses as it's less crowded and land is cheaper than the CBD.
Low class residential is in the inner city and is made up of cheaper houses of low quality and is normally very crowded.
Medium class residential is in the suburbs and has bigger houses than the low class area, the houses are of better quality and are not so tightly packed.
High class residential is in the suburbs and is expensive houses of high quality and houses which are very spaced out.
Explanation of the Burgess Model
The urban zones are like this because when the population was smaller and before the industrail revolution all the businesses were in the centre. As the revolution occured and population grew cities built outwards.
The most expensive business place is in the centre becasuse its where most business is done and where most people are.
Low class residential is closet to the centre because this is ugly and undesirable and so cheap.
High class residential is on the outside becasue this it's more expensive and more desirable to live away from hussle and bussle.
