  • Alfred now had experienced soldiers
  • Battle would be fought on clear ground, which Vikings didn't like
  • Army was made up of 4,000 men
  • Tactics were kept secret
  • One final battle would decide overall end result of who would be king of Wessex
  • Army had organised battle formation

Religious Factors

  • Believed they were protected by God
  • Time of year was Whitsun; a celebration of the time when, fifty days after the Resurrection, the Holy Ghost had descended on the apostles to prove that Christ had arison from the dead and that he was with them again
  • Alfred knew not to trust Guthrum with an oath of peace sworn in the name of God since the Vikings did not believe in Him

Political Factors

  • Alfred had not abandoned his men, meaning he was well supported
  • When Guthrum retreated to Chippenham, Alfred did not allow them to flee as he didn't trust Guthrum after he broke oaths, agreements etc.
