The Simpson Diversity Index
· The Simpson Diversity Index is a way of
measuring diversity in an area.
N = Total number of all species found
n = Total number of specific species found
· Richness = amount of different species in a sample
(regardless of individual number)
· Evenness = how varied the species are individually
e.g. 50A 50B 50C = even; 1A 2B 147C = uneven
· Density = number of a species per unit measured…read more

· Random = Random methods to produce objective
results: Random Number Generator Dropping
quadrats/points to randomly sample species numbers
· Systematic = regular intervals plotted to sample, also
subjective and even in coverage
>Line/Belt Transect Line or rope set up and
samples taken regularly (systematically) along the length
· Stratified Sampling = Adjustments to sampling
methods, taking into account environmental gradients…read more

· N = estimate for total pop. size N1/2 = Number of
individuals captured on 1st/2nd trapping
· m = Number of tagged individuals (from 1st
trapping) to also be found in 2nd sample…read more
