Modern business has seen a rise of own brands where, for example, supermarkets have successfully developed their own brand of goods. Many businesses
have their own R+D departments, or outsource this work to other businesses.
Market research does not always give the best possible information about what a new product should be like. Sometimes a "hunch" is just as good.
One way to make a product stand out is through differentiation. Good design is another way to make the product stand out to its rivals.
Scientific research can help designers find the best materials for the production of a product. Research and development is a key area of many businesses.
Prototypes are working models of finished possible products.
The design mix contains three elements: function, cost and appearance.
