Aerobic and Anaerobic Fitness
Muscles have 2 main ways of producing energy for movement:
Aerobic ­ which uses Oxygen
Anaerobic ­ which does not use Oxygen
Most physical activities require a combination of the two types of
fitness. 800 metres is a good example:
Energy is produced by anaerobic respiration,
The Start
as the athlete needs to set off fast to get
0 to 150 metres
into a good position.
Energy is produced by aerobic respiration,
The Middle
as the athlete needs to slow down to reduce
150 to 650 metres
levels of harmful lactic acid.
Energy is produced by anaerobic respiration,
The Finish
as the athlete needs to run faster to try
650 to 800 metres
