Examples of legislations in the UK to protect employees
The Sex Discrimination Act 1975: This makes it illegal for businesses to discriminate based
on gender.
The Race Relations Act 1976: This makes it illegal for businesses to discriminate on
grounds of race, for example choosing someone who is white in preference to someone
who is from an ethnic minority.
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995: It states that disability is a physical or mental
impairment which has a long term affect on people's ability to carry out daily tasks. The
law makes it illegal for businesses to discriminate on grounds of disability.
The Equal Pay Act 1970: The law states that an employee working at the same or similar
post as a member of staff of the opposite sex is entitled to equal rates of payment and
hours of work.
