AN IMPROVEMENT OF MY CASE STUDY ABOUT GENETICALLY MODIFIED
FOODS (1)
TOPIC
ARE GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS HARMFUL OR USEFUL?
Definition;
The term GM foods or GMOs (geneticallymodified organisms) is most
commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption
using the latest molecular biology techniques. Many people are being so
inquisitive about the safety of the (GMF). The doubt has been created due to the
fact that they are mainly modified in the laboratories. These foods are modified
in the laboratory to enhance the desired trait like increased resistance to
herbicides and increased nutrition content.
ABRIEF INTRODUCTION ABOUT G.M FOODS
The GM foods were introduced more than a decade ago. They are now grown
on millions of acres throughout the world which shows that people are adjusting
to the use of GM foods quickly. This has led to the increase in the prices of the
organic foods since many people are opting for the GM foods which are
cheaper thus leading to a reduced production of the organic foods. The GM
foods are strongly opposed against due to the various questions about its safety
and the longterm effects to the global food security and the environment.

grow using their modification chemicals like rapid grow that speeds up the
growth processes.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS(3)
Are GM foods assessed differently from traditional foods?
Generally consumers consider that traditional foods (that have often been eaten
for thousands of years) are safe. When new foods are developed by natural
methods, some of the existing characteristics of foods can be altered, either in a
positive or a negative way National food authorities may be called upon to
examine traditional foods, but this is not always the case. Indeed, new plants

developed through traditional breeding techniques may not be evaluated
rigorously using risk assessment techniques.
With GM foods most national authorities consider that specific assessments are
necessary. Specific systems have been set up for the rigorous evaluation of GM
organisms and GM foods relative to both human health and the environment.
Similar evaluations are generally not performed for traditional foods. Hence there
is a significant difference in the evaluation process prior to marketing for these
two groups of food.…read more

One of the objectives of the WHO Food Safety Programme is to assist national
authorities in the identification of foods that should be subject to risk
assessment, including GM foods, and to recommend the correct assessments

Cold tolerance Unexpected frost can destroy sensitive seedlings. An
antifreeze gene from cold water fish has been introduced into plants such
as tobacco and potato. With this antifreeze gene, these plants are able to
tolerate cold temperatures that normally would kill unmodified seedlings
(Note: I have not been able to find any journal articles or patents that
involve fish antifreeze proteins in strawberries, although I have seen such
reports in newspapers.…read more
