Diazonium Salts
SYNTHESIS
Using an aromatic amine and nitrous acid (HNO2)
NaNO2 + HCl NaCl + HNO2
phenylamine benzenediazonium
chloride
The ion is very unstable so temperature must be kept below 10°C to prevent it from decomposing.
REACTIONS
phenol
Steam distillation
chlorobenzene
reflux
bromobenzene N2 gas is also
reflux produced in each
reaction
benzonitrile
reflux
iodobenzene
The ion is a strong electrophile as it carries a positive charge, so it can undergo coupling reactions to
form coloured azo compounds from the joining of the two delocalized electron systems via the N=N
group. This must take place under alkaline conditions.
