Tropical Rainforest Management in Ecuador

Causes

  • The oil company Texaco has agreed to pay $40 million to help clear 160 of 600 waste pits that they created.
  • ...
  • Maxus energy has agreed to build an underground pipeline in the Yasuni National Park.
  • They are providing schools for the local Huaroni and Quichua tribes.
  • They are investing $60 million in environmental protection.

Effects

  • This will reduce the amount of contaminated water seeping into the soil and the rivers and therefore reduce the number of health problems experienced by the local Huaroni tribe (misscarriages and stomach cancer). It will also benefit the wildlife in that area.
  • This will have less of an environmental impact.
  • They are giving back to the community as an 'apology' for disrupting their lifestyles and damaging their home.
  • This will prevent any further damage to the rainforest.

Overall summary

The oil extraction that has been going on since the 1960s has caused many negative effects, however, the companies that have caused these problems are doing something to help reverse the effects or to prevent them from happening again :)
