The Biomedical Approach

Advantages

  • Biomedical Campaigns reach most people e.g. all women registered with a GP are offered screening for breast cancer.
  • There are a variety of treatments available.
  • Prevention is better than cure.
  • Most people have faith in science and medicine.
  • Tests and medication work on most people.

Disadvantages

  • Some people may not understand why they need treatment.
  • Some treatments are difficult to access e.g. waiting lists.
  • Some people may ignore offered strategies e.g. smear tests.
  • Some people may be put off by intrusive methods e.g. immunisations.
  • Treatments may not fix the root cause of a problem or its long term effects.

Evaluation

Definition: The biomedical approach takes medical action to improve health. This is carried out by doctors or other health professionals with the patient's consent whenever possible e.g. screening and immunisations.
