Advantages

  • No additional taxes to personal items bought within the EU

Disadvantages

  • The UK's status as an independent nation
  • Limited democracy
  • Loss of power resulting in limited sovereignty
  • Delay of important decisions due to large number of members
  • Limited potential to trade outside of the EU
  • Financial cost (roughly £4 billion)

Evaluation

Although EU membership gives a lot of personal freedom to UK citizens within EU countries, and easier trading for businesses, the cost on the UK as a country outweighs the benefits. As well as this, public opinion should be taken into account, and the 2015 referendum showed that, despite there not being much in it, slightly more people voted to leave the EU.
