Supplementary Vote

Advantages

  • Few wasted votes
  • Candidates encouraged to work a lot harder for majority
  • More choice than FPTP
  • Parties who often come second in FPTP will benefit more (Lib Dems)
  • Less safe seats
  • More representative of what voters want

Disadvantages

  • Not very proportional
  • Smaller parties do not benefit
  • Coalitions can be formed when no majority is gained

Evaluation

Majority system, used to elect London Mayor and French President. First and second choice given, if someone gets 50% as their first choice then they are elected. If not, top two candidates go into a second round. Second preferences on all losing candidates are added to the top two, and a majority is gained... usually.
