SV

Advantages

  • Relatively simple to Understand
  • Encourages campaigning for second preference votes
  • The votes all have the same value
  • Gives the voters a fair choice

Disadvantages

  • Many votes can be wasted
  • Voters may use tactical voting
  • Smaller parties will be ignored
  • Not as proportional as other systems
  • Voters may have to guess which two candidates will get the majority of votes before they vote their second preference, if they guess wrong their vote will be wasted

Evaluation

The Supplementary Vote (SV) is a shortened version of the Alternative Vote. Under SV, there are two columns on the ballot paper – one for voters to mark their first choice and one in which to mark a second choice. Voters mark one 'X' in each column, although voters are not required to make a second choice if they do not wish to.
SV is used for all directly elected mayors but most notable, the London Mayor. It is also used for police and crime commissioners in England and Wales.
