What is Proportional Representation?
Proportional representation is an electoral system in which the distribution of seats corresponds closely with the proportion of the total votes cast for each party.

What is the Alternative Vote?
A voting system in which each voter lists the candidates in order of preference. At each stage the candidate with the least votes is excluded and their votes transferred according to the voters preferences.

What is First Past the Post (FPTP) ?
A first-past-the-post voting system is one in which voters indicate on a ballot the candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives most votes wins.

What is the Supplementary Vote (SV)?
The Supplementary Vote is a voting system used for the election of a single candidate. Under SV each voter ranks from among the list of candidates a first and a second preference.

What is the Single Transferable Vote (STV)?
STV uses multi-member districts, and voters rank candidates in order of preference on the ballot paper. In most cases, this preference marking is optional, and voters are not required to rank-order all candidates if they wish, they can mark only one.

STV (Part 2)
After the total number of first-preference votes are tallied, the count then begins by establishing the quota of votes required for the election of a single candidate. The quota used is normally the Droop quota, calculated by the simple formula:

What is the Additional Member System (AMS)?
a type of proportional representation in which each elector votes separately for a party and for a representative.
