SP Values Critical Analysis

Advantages

  • Personal, contextualised account of personality, adding value beyond trait understanding
  • Support for Schwartz's model cross-culturally
  • Correlates and impacts real behaviour and attitudes, with better predictions than traits
  • Relevant in wider social implications e.g. politics
  • Rank-order stability

Disadvantages

  • Little understood about why they form
  • Changeable through interaction with social world: Dependent on social context e.g. generational differences, life events
  • Only impact in typical instantiations
  • Only stable if unchallenged: Can be manipulated to change
  • Schwartz Value Survey not easy to apply across cultures (although portrait-values questionnaire solved this issue)

Evaluation

Overall, they key issues with a trait account of personality is that they depend so much on interaction in the social world and so may not produce stable long-term understandings of people. However, they do provide a more personal and enriched understanding of character, with useful application to understanding real attitudes and decisions in specific situations.
