Social contract in the GDR

Advantages

  • Healthcare got better- more doctors and homecare and mental homes arrived.
  • Less deaths at birth.
  • Housing increased. 60-70000 annually
  • Rent cheap
  • Industrial areas developed.
  • 1 million people benefited from minimum wage
  • Polytechnics arrived in 1989.
  • Less elitism in education

Disadvantages

  • Pollution got worse
  • Not enough equipment
  • Elite got better health care
  • 2/3rds of cities destroyed
  • 35% of people unhappy
  • Couldn't afford repairs
  • Poor quality houses
  • People  had no incentive
  • Could not fire people
  • Made conformity more likely
  • Workforce overqualified.

Evaluation

Overall the social contract was not successful. This is due to the fact that it did not allow productivity to increase as many people did not have any productive work to do. It also encouraged elitism as the wealthy could afford better housing and healthcare and the Soviet population were not significantly happier.
