Social Change - AQA PSychology A/AS level

Advantages

  • results in social change through majority influence in smoking and drinking campaigns

Disadvantages

  • often minority creates the potential for a change but rarely happens quickly due to a stong tendancy of humans to conform to the majority position
  • influence of minorities is limited by being labelled as deviant behaviour and majority do not want to be seen as deviant themselves - then the majority focuses on the messager (a deviant) rather than the message
  • not all social norm interventions have led to social change - study investigating effectiveness of a social norms campaign in drinking issued a survey before the intervention and one 3 years after and there was little difference
  • boomerang effect with social norms - research in electricity usage found social norm intervention effective for reducing the electricity usage with those who heavily use electricity but for those who used less than the average ended up using more electricity during the intervention
