Should women be allowed to be ordained priests?

Advantages

  • Given the culture of the time, having women as disciples would not have been possible for Jesus. He was being realistic only choosing men, because women were not seen as equal in society then. Things have changed in modern times.
  • Paul's teaching is inconsistent. In other passages he says that there is 'no difference between men and women.'
  • Sometimes a stand has to be made, and even if some don't agree, we've got to start somewhere. Not all people agreed with abolishment of slavery, but if we waited until all agree, nothing would ever get done.
  • Women have a unique contribution to make.

Disadvantages

  • Jesus chose men as his disciples and the church has applied this to the priesthood. Male priesthood is part of Church tradition and canon law.
  • Some St. Paul's teaching states that women are not to lead worship.
  • Having women priests has led to problems in the Anglican Church. Some Anglicans left the denomination because they did not agree with the ordination of women.
  • Men and women are essentially different.
