Advantages

  • real world application- research into role of father means advice can be given to parents e.g about work and who should return or reassure lesbians no father isn't a problem

Disadvantages

  • confusion over research question- some researchers look at fathers as primary attachment figures whereas some look as secondary attachment figures
  • research into role of father vary in finding according to the type of methodology used- grossmann shows fathers have thew role of play and stimulation which suggests if no fathers in family child will lack development however single parents or same sex families do not develop differently

Evaluation

-difficult to answer simple question as to the 'role of the father' it depends on what specific role is being discussed due to fathers actually being able to take a maternal role- question about families and role of father still remains unanswered+parenal anxiety around role of the father can be reduced due to research evidence
