Progress and Limitations in the CRM due to Freedom Rides

Advantages

  • Lead to the Interstate Commerce Commission
  • Showed that there was a new generation of social activists
  • Exposed the fact that JFK was not committed to racial equality
  • Brought public attention to three organisations, CORE, SCLC and SNNC

Disadvantages

  • Some southern states such as Georgia refused to comply to the new law
  • The government had not chosen a side, meaning that many may not have helped the Riders
  • There was a rivalry between the three organisations

Evaluation

Overall, the Freedom Rides were very effective in the Civil Rights Movement as they lead to the new law about desegregation being passed and showed the public the horrors of racism. It had managed to change the governments's opinion and and meant that more people were paying attention and were committed to the Civil Rights Movement.
